Using combat sport to tackle mental health

Our Story

The Mental Shift was founded by Kai Leighton at the age of 17 following his struggle with depression. After a suicide attempt in 2020 Kai set out to find a way to ensure no other lad had to suffer in silence. This resulted in him meeting Craig Jose from Northern Kings Gym, where he guided Kai on his journey to living a happier and healthier life, leading to the incorporation of TMS in November 2022. It is no lie that young men feel the need to suffer in silence, leading to rising numbers of male suicide, crisis team referrals, and rising crime rates - our aim... to stop this.

Our Aim

Through the power of Muay Thai, we aim to provide young lads with a method of self-help. A way to forever support their mental wellbeing through the benefits if physical activity. We run a 12-week Muay Thai training program where individuals, often referred by local social care systems, can reap the benefits of free training/gear/mentoring/advice. Our programs allow our participants to join a community where they can learn the art of Muay Thai, providing unlimited physical and mental benefits.
